Class Envy and the Real Housewives of Atlanta
So the message boards have been aflame with commentary on Bravo’s The Real housewives of Atlanta. Seems like Black folks are u in arms on the Housewives and can’t believe that such women are parading around tv representing Atlanta. The bulk of the complaints about the ladies seem to fall into the following categories:
- They’re all gold diggers. Apparently any Black woman who marries a wealthy man must be a gold digger.
- They’re lazy (1). They’re housewives. They don’t work. They are living off their men’s coattails. How horrible is that?
- They’re lazy (2). Who does DeShawn thinks he is hiring a full staff for that massive estate she owns. She’s a housewife for goodness sake. She should be doing it herself.
- They’re bad parents. Kim should not have her daughter around while she gets gifts from her Sugar Daddy.
My thoughts: how are they any different from any of the housewives form other seasons?
The Real Housewives of Orange County and The Real Housewives of New York were:
- Materialistic
- Alcoholic
- Bad Parents
- Loud
- Catty
- Bitchy
- Married to rich emn
- Unashamed social climbers
Sounds a lot like the chicks on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. And didn’t some of the other housewives have help as well? So why is it okay for the wealthy white women to act well…like catty, snobby bitches and not so much for the Black women? Where was all the outrage about the other shows? Where was all the talk of gold digging and laziness? And what’s with the housewife hate? You’re not a real Black woman unless you’re working or ghetto (seems like everyone likes NeNe ’cause she’s “real.”)?
Are we seriously this narrow minded and hateful towards those who are doing financially better than we are? Newsflash: I’m sure Cindy McCain, Melinda Gates and Angelina Jolie don’t do their own laundry, cook their own meals, or clean their own houses. I’m sure they have full staffs to take care of their (many) massive estates. I’m sure they’ve all had nannies for their kids. Money allows you not to have to do the grunt work. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Folk need to stop hating and enjoy the show for what it is: good fun and a look at Black life we don’t normally get to see on tv. But from the comments it seems like Black folk only want to see loud, ghetto, struggling Black folks on the boob tube….is that really all we can relate too?
