Here I was wondering what Ms. Headley was what up to and, it appears, she is doing just fine :

Popular Tony award-winning vocalist Heather Headley captures the Number One slot on Billboard’s Top Christian & Gospel Chart and number 6 on the R&B Charts with her new project, Audience Of One.

The January 13th release kicks off a month long series of appearances and promotional events for Headley who celebrates her first number one album. Audience Of One charted in the Number One slot on the Contemporary Christian Billboard Chart and debuted Number One on the Christian/Gospel album chart on iTunes.

Headley’s album features a diverse mix of inspirational and traditional songs including the hit duet with label-mate, Smokie Norful, the Lionel Richie penned “Jesus Is Love.” The single is one of the hottest songs at Gospel Radio right now and is quickly making its way up the R&R Gospel charts. The song is also being promoted at Urban AC Radio with an impact date of January 26th.

Nice. I didn’t realize she had made the switch to gospel. This is going to sound mean, but I often think about gospel music as the place where failed R&B artists try and revive their careers.

A successful gospel record only needs to sell 100,000 copies to  be considered a major success and with the church tradition being as it is in the black community, many artists got their start in the church. It’s not really a surprise that they would return their when times get tough elsewhere.

Ms.  Headley is currently embarking on a national promotional tour promoting her her album and also performed on Bet’s Celebration of Gospel this past Sunday. If you missed it I’m sure yu can catch it again as BET (like MTV) repeats their award shows ad nauseam.
