So Sean “Diddy” Combs is an Asshole. What Else is New?
Seems like someone has gon and decided to write a “tell all” book about Mr. Bitchassness himself:
Title: Dancing With The Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip Hop by Mark Curry
(PAGE 79) Despite amazing record sales Mark Curry claims that Biggie resorted to selling dope and homemade duplicates of his cd from the trunk of his car just to earn spending money
(Page 94) Jimmy Henchmen told Tupac “why you blaming Puffy and Biggie. Them n*ggas aint got nuthin to do with this shooting. Nobody came to rob you. They came to discipline you and that’s what happened”
Side note: that’s a serious accusation, how do you know that was said?(page 139) He writes that Puffy lured G Dep with a $350,000 signing advance and a 5 album deal. Puffy did not offer him any counseling on how to handle money. After he spent about 1/6th of the money he discovered taxes, production contracts and stipulations held up the rest of his money. In less than 6 months G Dep was broke, in debt to Puffy and lost himself to drugs
My response to these “revelations,” is: who the hell cares? Who didn’t know Diddy was an ass and cheated his artists. For years folk been talking about how signing with Bad Boy was a guarantee your career was going nowhere and you were never going to get paid.
And, not defending Diddy, much of this is standard music business practices. I often say boxing and the music biz are the biggest legal rackets around. I mean the labels pull is legendary. Where else can you sign a contract with someone’s company, they promise to promote you, but ever penny they spend on you comes out of your pocket.
That alone wouldn’t be so bad, but they also have first right of refusal on who produces your music, what sings you sing and even down to the clothes you where. So not only do they gank your money, but they get to tell you with whom and how to spend your money as well.
I’m not the least bit excited about this book. Tell me some shit I don’t already know. Confirm some of those gay rumors. Tell me he was the one shooting the gun that killed TuPac. Tell me he was having an affair with Faith. Something. Just not this drivel.
